Sloetjes steers VakifBank win in Kobe 2017 opener

 

Lonneke Sloetjes guided VakifBank's straight-set with over Dinamo Moscow with 16 points

Kobe, Japan, May 9, 2017 – Lonneke Sloetjes guided VakifBank Istanbul to win their first match 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) over Dinamo Moscow in Pool A of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship Kobe 2017 at Green Arena Kobe on Tuesday.



The Rio 2016 Best Opposite from the Netherlands recorded all 16 points from solid spikes, while Dinamo Moscow star Nataliya Goncharova topped all scorers with 19 points. Slotjes’ team-mates Zhu Ting (Rio 2016 MVP and top scorer from China) and Kubra Akman contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively.

VakifBank - 2013 champions and last year's bronze medallists - took their overall FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship win-loss record to 11-3 by dominating Club World Championship debutants Dinamo Moscow on attack, while the former also blocked and served better in the tough encounter. Akman and Milena Rasic had five blocks each out of the team’s total of 12.

Dinamo Moscow tried to hold off VakifBank in the opening set with great net defence, but the scoring trio of Sloetjes, who finished second behind Zhu in scoring at Rio 2016, Zhu and 2014 World Championship MVP Kimberly Hill powered the Turkish club to clinch the set at 25-22. VakifBank had better control with Sloetjes leading the charge to take the next two sets 25-19 and 25-18.
