Eczacibasi and Volero clash in friendlies as race for Kobe 2017 heats up

 

Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul and Volero Zurich in action during the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship semifinals in Zurich - the last time the two sides met in an official game.

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 5, 2017 - Two-time FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship winners Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul and 2015 bronze medallists Volero Zurich open the new year with a series of two friendlies in Zurich, ahead of their obligations in the European Champions League and the race for a ticket to the 2017 FIVB Club World Championship.

The two sides will meet on Thursday, January 5 (at 20.00 local time) and Friday, January 6 (16.30) in Zurich.



The two clubs last met in an official match in the semifinals of the 2015 FIVB Club World Championship, with Eczacibasi winning in four sets. The Turkish team went on to win the title, while Volero won the bronze medal game for third place.

Both also competed in the 2016 edition of the Club Worlds in Manila, with Eczacibasi successfully defending their title after a five-set win in the final over Italy's Pomi Casalmaggiore and Volero finishing fourth after going down in the bronze medal game to Turkey's VakifBank Istanbul.



They are both competing in the European Champions League this season, vying for a direct ticket to the 2017 FIVB Club World Championship, from May 8 to 14 in Kobe.

Eczacibasi are up against their archrivals VakifBank on January 10 at Istanbul's Burhan Felek, while Volero next host Dinamo Moscow at home on January 12.

The winner of the Champions League joins hosts Hisamitsu Kobe and Asian qualifiers NEC Red Rockets of Kawasaki, as well as the 2017 South American Club champions for the World Championship. Four wild cards will also be awarded.
